Demo Reel for Havok Physics

Our friends at Havok asked us to create an environment where they could show off their wonderful physics system. Rather than have only a trailer, they wanted us to build a small, playable demo that they could take out into shows and conferences.
We looked at the project almost as if we were building a game, starting by creating a game design document, which would inform the path the player / user would expect to take along the experience. We knew there would need to be a lot of physical interactions and set pieces to really show off they systems well. The design expanded to contain three main areas, which would each focus on a particular type of effect.
Once this was in place and approved, our cinematics team set to work to design and build the locations from scratch. We decided to create areas by kit bashing with assets, which worked well with the client expectations. It was vital though, that we mould them into something unique, so they didn't seem like a world one had seen before. Our artists set dressed them beautifully to deliver just that. Once we added a custom lighting pass, the areas sprang to life.
We designed unique set pieces; for example, a cave roof which exploded down, to crush a foot bridge, with debris mounting up all around. The scene was set up and then all the physics properties were built to enable the scene to work. The joy of this process is of course, that we were able to play with detailed collisions, which would run in a unique way each time.
On top of this, we added dust, moveable objects, exploding walls, leaves blowing in the wind, skulls piling up - all kinds of great things.
All through the project, we worked closely with the client to steer the planned direction and make sure we could reactively tweak and incorporate developing ideas to create a great final piece.
